How This Calculator Works
Hawaii has the most granular income tax in the nation: TWELVE progressive brackets running from 1.4% on your first $4,800 of taxable income all the way to 11% above $400,000. The middle brackets climb steeply — 5.5% at $19,200, 7.6% at $43,200, 8.2% at $62,400 — which means Hawaii's effective rates hit high-tax-state territory much earlier than the 11% headline suggests. A $100,000 earner is already in the 8.25% bracket (the brackets above $62,400 run 8.25%, 9%, 10%, 11%).
The state standard deduction is small: $2,200 single / $4,400 married, plus personal exemptions of $1,144 per person. On $85,000 single, taxable income is about $79,420, and running it through all twelve brackets produces roughly $5,950 in Hawaii tax — a 7% effective rate on gross. Honolulu adds no city income tax, but the state's high cost of living makes the absolute dollar burden feel heavier than the percentages imply.
Hawaii exempts Social Security fully and gives a retirement income exclusion of up to $88,000 per person for qualifying pensions (combined with military, federal, and state pension rules). High-earners should note the 11% top rate is second-highest in the US behind California's 13.3%.
The rest of the tax picture: property tax is famously the lowest in the nation at 0.31% average (Hawaii's assessment system is generous to owner-occupants), but the general excise tax (GET) — Hawaii's version of sales tax — applies to virtually every transaction at 4% (4.5% on Oahu) and gets baked into prices at every level of the supply chain. Effective consumption tax burden is much higher than the stated rate.
Filing in Hawaii: the resident return is Form N-11, filed with the Hawaii Department of Taxation — and the state deadline is April 20, five days after the federal deadline. Hawaii provides free online filing through its tax portal.
How It's Calculated
Formula
Step-by-Step
- 1Run Hawaii's twelve brackets (1.4% to 11%) after the state deduction ($2,200 single) and per-person exemptions
- 2Subtract pre-tax deductions (401(k), HSA) from gross pay to get adjusted gross income
- 3Apply the federal standard deduction ($16,100 single / $32,200 married) for federal taxable income
- 4Calculate federal tax using the 2026 progressive brackets (10%–37%) per IRS Publication 15-T
- 5Calculate FICA: 6.2% Social Security (up to $184,500) + 1.45% Medicare (no cap)
- 6Subtract all taxes and pre-tax deductions from gross pay to get net take-home pay
