How This Calculator Works
Missouri uses a progressive income tax system with rates ranging from 2% to 4.8% for 2026. The standard deduction is $14,200 (single) or $28,400 (married). Most middle-income earners land in the 3.5%–4.8% range, which is moderate compared to neighboring states.
On a $75,000 salary filing single, after the $14,200 standard deduction, your Missouri state tax comes to roughly $2,500–$2,700. Compare that to Illinois at 4.95% flat on the same income ($3,450) and Missouri looks pretty good. But compare it to Tennessee at 0% and the difference is obvious.
On top of Missouri tax, you've got federal progressive brackets with the standard deduction, plus FICA at 7.65% combined. 401(k) contributions reduce taxable income at both the federal and state level. Missouri also allows a deduction for federal income tax paid, which softens the blow somewhat.
Missouri doesn't tax Social Security benefits for most retirees. Property taxes average about 1.01%, and combined sales tax is around 8.33%. Kansas City and St. Louis have additional city earnings taxes of 1%. Compare MO to other states to see where you come out ahead.
