How This Calculator Works

New Mexico runs a six-bracket progressive tax from 1.5% up to 5.9% for 2026 (HB 252 lowered the rates for 2025). The structure: 1.5% on your first $5,500 of taxable income (single), 3.2% to $16,500, 4.3% to $33,500, 4.7% to $66,500, 4.9% to $210,000, and 5.9% above.

On a $64,000 single salary: taxable income after the standard deduction is $47,900. The low brackets consume $33,500 at about $1,166, and the remaining $14,400 at 4.7% costs about $677 — roughly $1,842 total, a 2.9% effective rate.

New Mexico is one of the most retiree-friendly states in the West: Social Security is fully exempt, and there's a deduction of up to $8,000 per person ($15,200 for 65+) for qualifying retirement income (pensions, 401(k), IRA). The state also allows a deduction for certain military benefits. Low income-tax rates plus generous retirement breaks make New Mexico competitive with zero-tax states for retirees.

Property tax is cheap at 0.92%, but combined sales tax (called gross receipts tax in New Mexico) runs 7.66% on average and applies broadly to services. The GRT structure embeds tax at multiple production levels, which pushes effective consumption costs above the stated rate.

Filing in New Mexico: the resident return is Form PIT-1, due to the Taxation and Revenue Department by April 15. New Mexico offers free e-file, and the retirement deductions are claimed directly on the PIT-1.

How It's Calculated

Formula

Net Pay = Gross Income − (Federal Tax + New Mexico State Tax + FICA + Pre-tax Deductions)

Step-by-Step

  1. 1Run New Mexico's 1.5%–5.9% brackets against federal taxable income — New Mexico keeps the federal standard deduction
  2. 2Subtract pre-tax deductions (401(k), HSA) from gross pay to get adjusted gross income
  3. 3Apply the federal standard deduction ($16,100 single / $32,200 married) for federal taxable income
  4. 4Calculate federal tax using the 2026 progressive brackets (10%–37%) per IRS Publication 15-T
  5. 5Calculate FICA: 6.2% Social Security (up to $184,500) + 1.45% Medicare (no cap)
  6. 6Subtract all taxes and pre-tax deductions from gross pay to get net take-home pay

Example

A single filer earning $64,000 has $47,900 of taxable income after the federal deduction. The brackets produce roughly $1,842 in state tax — a low 2.9% effective rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What changed in New Mexico's 2026 tax rates?

New Mexico completed a major rate overhaul in 2024–2025 — every bracket dropped, with the top rate falling to 5.9% and the bottom to 1.5%. The state also kept the federal standard deduction.

How retiree-friendly is New Mexico?

Very — Social Security is fully exempt, and residents can deduct up to $8,000 per person of qualifying retirement income ($15,200 for those 65+). For retirees drawing primarily from Social Security and a 401(k), New Mexico's effective rate approaches zero.

What is New Mexico's gross receipts tax?

The GRT is New Mexico's version of sales tax — 7.66% average — but it applies broadly to services as well as goods, and it's embedded at multiple production levels. Effective consumption costs run above the stated rate.

Do Albuquerque and Santa Fe have local income taxes?

No — neither city, nor any New Mexico municipality, taxes wages. The state income tax is the only withholding line on a New Mexico paycheck.
